We have the laws, where wearing a helmet is a compulsion, on papers at least. In some cities, especially at the Financial Year endings, helmets are enforced and people are charged heavily if they violate the rules. As a result many roadside helmet shops emerge. And the prices start from as low as 300 rupees if not less. Well, their usual customer base is the people who want to buy helmets just to avoid the fines. Every year this happens, again and again.

Do you see something wrong here? Not with the rules enforcement, but the purchases of cheap helmets. If you think those kind of helmets will protect you, you are dead wrong, they cannot. First their material is not really up to the standard and second is the design of the cheap helmets. They are neither designed to protect you in case of a crash based on different impact situations nor do they have enough padding to stay firm on you head.
Started wearing a helmet? It is just not enough. “Wear the right helmet, and wear the helmet right”. Today we are going to explain few of the things you should keep in mind while buying a helmet. Roadside helmets are something to run away from. Look for the certification signs where the helmet has passed (e.g. ISI mark, DOT certificate). Try to go for a good brand rather than looking at the price and settling on a cheaper helmet.
Now the most important part, what kind of helmet is best for you? I remember when I started hunting for a helmet some 5 years ago. I didn’t know anything about helmets. I took a friend of mine with me to a shop and got myself an off-road helmet. To be honest, the decision was entirely based on the looks of the helmet. It never was a perfect fit. It used to move around my head at the time of riding and on the speeds north of 80 the wind used to push the helmet upwards. It was a nightmare. Then something happened that changed me as a biker for good. (To be continued.......)
