After a grueling duo of races at Japan and Australia, the MotoGP paddock flies to Malaysia for Round 17 of the MotoGP World championship. Sepang has been on the GP calendar since 1999, deciding many World titles across various sporting events.
Sepang is known for its hot tropical climate and track temperatures reach 50 degrees centigrade in the afternoon sessions. However, the weather is unpredictable and the tropical heat might be replaced by heavy downpours which might potentially wash away sessions altogether. The tropical climate and a challenging layout tests the mettle of the best motorcycle racers in the world.
Teams often come to Sepang with a solid base setting for the race, as most of the testing of the bikes is done here. Sepang is home for the preseason tests which is before every component is homologated and sealed for the upcoming season. Riders like Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo and many others might not have any sort of problem with the setup for the race.
With Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo separated by Just 11 points with two races to go, this race will be one of the most important races of the season as the championship might be decided on Sunday itself, owing to the following scenarios.
The scenarios are as follows:
- If Rossi wins the race and Lorenzo finishes sixth or below.
- If Rossi finishes second and Lorenzo finishes 7th or below.
- If Rossi finishes third and Lorenzo has a DNF or fails to score points.
With Rain forecast on Saturday and Sunday due to an upcoming storm approaching Malaysia, the odds are on Rossi's favor, except for Jorge's stellar performance in the wet.
