Tech Talk: Self Cancelling Smart Turn System

  • Jun 25, 2016
  • |   Comments
One feature that I’ve always admired on cars is their self cancelling indicator system, however, the same has been incorporated in almost all the premium class superbikes and a few entry level sportbikes but their accuracy and precision is still remain doubtful. The reason behind the inefficiency of conventional self cancelling turn signals is their mechanical approach. Often the self cancelling type indicator systems are based on mechanized timer relay or simply mechanical on-off switch based on one time fixed steering movement.

Although, the conventional self cancelling indicator systems are helpful but even they can be a real painful experience in situation like where you actually don’t want to cancel the signal and it gets cancelled automatically or vice versa. The situation can be catastrophic when wrong information transmits to the other road users. A Slovanian startup firm “ABCS Sistem” has designed a Smart Turn System (STS) to address the above mentioned problem.

The STS is based on motion sensor technology and it actually registers hundreds of data related to the various motions done by a motorcycle and based on information gathered the system does a complex computation to determine the correct time to cancel the turn signal. With the help of motion sensors the Smart Turn System (STS) monitors the vital elements like motorbike’s trajectory, its acceleration, bank angle and associated vibrations. Later after doing compilation of all the registered information the system determines whether the rider has completed the turn or changed the lane, based on the computation the system automatically cancels the indicator.

The STS is a waterproof system and can easily be installed on variety of motorcycle models. The position of the equipment must be fixed on the motorbike as it will have to be calibrated beforehand. The price of the STS module is expected to be approx $160 that comes roughly around Rs 10,500.

The system is indeed innovative but going a step further we would love to see something that not only cancels the indicators for us but also give turn signal for us. Don’t you think the STS has brought us one step closer to this to happen? Do share you mind on this in the comment section below.
