Tech Talk: Vehicle Telematics, a need of today

Since the roads are being flooded, with a huge number of vehicles each year. It is paramount that we take the matter of road safety, seriously. Every year 20-40 million people die in the road accidents across the globe. According to research, in the absence of necessary actions, unsafe driving will become the seventh leading cause of death across the world by 2030. Causes of accidents range from driver’s unconsciousness to over speeding, to defective road conditions.

A budding new technology can help the driver and passenger in the daily commute, it is known an Vehicle Telematics. It is a method of monitoring a vehicle by combining a GPS with vehicle’s onboard diagnostics. This enables a lot of new features like pinpointing the exact location of the vehicle, control vehicle speed and monitor vehicle’s current health. This new way of monitoring vehicles will prevent theft, provide crash-assistance and help to navigate your vehicle!!

Vehicle Telematics also helps in the following ways:
• GPS pin-pointing helps during vehicle theft.
• Device’s crash proof feature protects it during a crash and also automatically notifies the call center to alert authorities during the unfortunate event.
• The device can easily be controlled through smartphone and uses land-based cell towers for communication to prevent signal loss.
• The device comes with an SOS button, in case if you’re unable to reach your phone during danger or if a thief tries to enter your car.
• If you’re left stranded near the road, then at the click of a button you can summon roadside assistance.
• It enables you to keep a tap on your driver and know how safe he/she is driving. Using the device you can check the maximum speed and instruct your driver to slow down.
• Automatically, once a month the user will get an e-mail explaining the current condition of the vehicle. You can even get the same report whenever you want if you’re going for a service.
• Prices at a nearby petrol station, navigation, and all information about the “legends” on the map can easily be accessed using the device.
This technology combines the versatility of using a mobile phone, a GPS and a diagnostic center, all in one. This enables you to drive with an ease of mind while accessing all the information easily. Sad thing is that this technology is not yet available for motorcycles because God knows how badly we need such a system.
