Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has revised the Indian standards for Petrol and Diesel as per BSVI fuel norms. Presently the ongoing standards cover the fuel requirement based on the emission norms up to BS IV. To conserve the natural resources and to prevent the environment by reducing air pollution Government of India has decided to implement BS VI (Bharat Stage Six) emission norms. The BSVI norms will be implemented in Delhi & NCR from “1 April’18” whereas the same will be implemented in rest of the country from “1 April’20”.To work in tandem with the Government’s decision the governing body Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has revised the standards on Petrol & Diesel incorporating BS VI fuel specifications. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has welcomed the step of BIS as the revised standards on Petrol and Diesel will help improving the environment and reducing the respiratory problems.
The revised standard will permit increased blending of Ethanol in the Petrol and Bio-Diesel in Diesel thereby helping in conservation of natural resources and reducing the import of crude oil in the country. The new standards will also help to reduce the Sulfur content expelled in the environment through the burnt fuel; this will also reduce emission of Nitrogen Oxides (NOX).
