BMW has filed patent application for a unique W3 internal combustion engine. However the W3 type of engine is not new and Feuling's W3 is among the most popular engines still in use on some custom motorcycles. According to reports on VisorDown, BMW has filed two different designs of W3 engines for patent.The unique feature of the W3 engine design put for the patent by the BMW is that, it can be easily fit into similar sized twin cylinder engine bay with additional third cylinder. This feature of the design gives tremendous scope to the manufacturer to generate extra performance from the W3 engine with almost same sized twin cylinder engines. As per the documents submitted by BMW to the Patent authority, the invention is noble and yet unknown type of W3 design internal combustion engine with reciprocating piston.
If BMW gets the patent and comes with the W3 engine, there would be a chance of a new power cruiser from BMW. It would be really nice to see three big cylinders thumping with a unique sound on a humongous power cruiser.
