The new Fireblade is a departure from Honda’s old all mechanical no electronic approach towards their streetbikes. With the increase in competition in the highest level of production motorcycle racing – WSBK, Honda has upped the ante with an entirely new motorbike for the 2017 model year.
The new Fireblade SP also has a number of firsts – The first production bike ever to have a Titanium fuel tank, the first mass produced Honda bike to have a full suite of electronics coupled to a 6 axis IMU and a 9 level traction control. The ‘Blade also has Ohlins’ electronic NIX and TTX36 suspension components which is also a first on a Honda. (SP and SP2 only). The interface has a color TFT display similar to the ones on the Honda RC213V-S and its liter class rivals (Yamaha R1 and Ducati Panigale R). The electronics suite include 9 level traction control, Slide and wheelie control, two- way quickshifter with auto blipping (Three modes to adjust cut-off time), three level Engine braking control, Ride-by-wire, electronic suspension from Ohlins and Race ABS.
The Fireblade SP2 is a Homologation special limited to just 500 units, the only visual difference being the Golden magnesium Marchesini rims. The inner differences are staggering – the SP2 gets HRC’s race kit which include Race spec camshafts, valve springs, a Race ECU and an exhaust which bumps up the power north of the 200 HP marker. The compression ratio has been increased from 12.3:1 to 13:1, the redline pushed from 12,250 RPM to 13,000 RPM resulting in a more peaky top end and a step ahead towards ending Kawasaki’s dominance in the superbike field.
