Moto2: Luis Salom departs after FP2 crash, Catalan GP to use F1 layout

  • |   Comments
SAG team's Luis Salom passed away in the evening after a horrifying crash in the afternoon practice session. Salom was taken to the medical center before he was taken to the Barcelona university hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The 24 year old Majorcan was an aggressive and emotional rider who was always in the mix for victories and podiums in the lightweight 125 and Moto3 classes. As A RedBull rookies cup graduate he earned loads of experience onboard competitive machinery and worked with the Red bull KTM Ajo squad run by Aki Ajo. He then graduated to the intermediate class onboard Sito Pons' Paginas Amarillas Kalex bike for two seasons, partnering his arch rivals Maverick Viñales and Alex Rins in 2014 and 2015.

Following the tragic death of Luis Salom, the FIM and the safety commission has decided to alter the circuit layout for the rest of the weekend.

Circuit de Catalunya has two different layouts, differing from the exit of turn 10 and bypasses the infamous turn 12 where Luis crashed. This step was taken after a group of riders requested the safety commission to alter the alignment as the fast right handed corner had no Gravel traps to reduce the severity of a crash. Therefore the Formula one layout shall be used thereon. Riders get an extra 15 minutes of Free practice on Saturday morning in order to get used to the revised layout of the final sector.
Revised Schedule:

Saturday

08:40-09:35 - 55 min. - Moto3™ Free Practice 3

09:50-10:50 - 60 min. - MotoGP™ Free Practice 3

11:05-12:05 - 60 min. - Moto2™ Free Practice 3

12:35-13:15 - 40 min. - Moto3™ Qualifying

13:30-14:00 - 30 min. - MotoGP™ Free Practice 4

14:10-14:25 - 15 min. - MotoGP™ Qualifying 1

14:35-14:50 - 15 min. - MotoGP™ Qualifying 2

15:05-15:50 - 45 min. - Moto2™ Qualifying
A hugely emotional and aggressive rider and a very good human being, Luis shall be remembered among his friends, family and fans alike. BikesIndia expresses its sincere condolences for the loss.
