MotoGP Round 13- Marquez Triumphs In A Frantic Dry-Wet-Dry Race

Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) stood on the top step of the podium for the fourth time in this season, while Jorge Lorenzo crashed out of the race. The 28 lap showdown started off as a dry race, with Marquez and Lorenzo leading the way from Valentino Rossi. However, the heavens opened up and so did the pit lane, allowing riders to switch to their #2 bikes setup for the wet. Though the duo pulled away from Rossi, Rossi closed in the gap significantly and took the lead.

There was more drama as the rain stopped and the track started drying out, forcing riders to pit in for the second time to venture out on their dry bikes. Marquez was the first from the front-runners to make the switch, which turned out to be a masterstroke in his victory today. Marquez pulled a huge gap between him and Monster Yamaha Tech3's Bradley Smith, who eventually finished second.

Monster Yamaha Tech3's Bradley Smith remained on slicks throughout the race, which dropped him to as low as 21st place. But as the track dried on and the riders pitted for their bikes, He found himself in second place behind Marquez, clinching his second Podium in his MotoGP career.

Probably the most lucky guy on the grid in today's race is Scott Redding. The Estrella Galicia Marc VDS rider crashed heavily, but pitted to change his bike in time and found himself behind the Open class Yamaha of Loris Baz (Forward Racing Yamaha). using the grunt of the Factory spec RC213V, he obliterated the gap to finish on the last step of the podium.

Forward Racing Yamaha's Loris Baz had his best finish of his MotoGP career in fourth, as himself and his teammate Claudio Corti were the first to do the second pit stop. This set him right in the podium places in third, who would have been only the first open class rider to finish on the podium in two years. He leads the open class standings with 28 points from Hector Barbera (Avintia Ducati) and Jack Miller (LCR Honda).

Jorge Lorenzo's weekend ended in a disaster as he crashed out on his first lap after the second pit stop while pushing hard. The Movistar Yamaha rider lost the front and damaged his YZR-M1 badly and had a minor concussion in his right arm. This DNF allowed Valentino Rossi to pull a 23 point lead over him, despite finishing fifth.

A late second pit stop pushed Valentino Rossi out of Podium contention at his home race. He waited on until Jorge Lorenzo pitted and after he did, he found himself in Fifth, 15 seconds behind Loris Baz in 4th. This allowed him to pull a small buffer of 23 points between him and his team mate Jorge Lorenzo.
