MotoGP Round 8: Dovizioso clinches pole in a tricky qualifying session

Ducati team’s Andrea Dovizioso clinches his fourth Pole position in the MotoGP class and the grid will have a Factory Ducati on either side as Andrea Iannone will be starting last on the grid after his incident involving Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo in Catalunya.

Free Practice 4 was a wet session with riders trying out wet spec and intermediate Michelin tires in the 30 minute session. Riders and teams extracted valuable information regarding wet and intermediate setups to be prepared for the tricky weather which is predicted for tomorrow’s 26 lap race and riders were greeted by multiple crashes in mysterious circumstances. Maverick Vinales (Team Suzuki Ecstar) was the first one to hit the deck, followed by fellow Spanish rider Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda). The two time world champion was seen borrowing a photographer’s scooter to start his quest for Pole position and eventually finished 4th on the grid.

Contrasting emotions in the Movistar Yamaha garage, as Valentino Rossi grabbed second place on the grid ahead of Octo Pramac Ducati’s Scott Redding while Jorge Lorenzo was left out in the cold in 11th overall. The 37 year old Italian illuminated the timing screens with red all over but Dovizioso and Redding benefited from Rossi’s tow to claim their front row starts. Q1 saw Tech3’s Pol Espargaro and Aspar’s Yonny Hernandez gain access to Q2 and the 25 year old Spaniard will be starting from the third row. Hernandez grabbed a surprisingly high 5th place, benefiting from the old Desmosedici GP14.2’s exceptional wet weather characteristics.

Team Suzuki Ecstar struggled to get in grips with the tricky conditions as Aleix Espargaro will start the first ever Sunday race at the Dutch venue in 8th. Yamaha-bound Vinales had a crash on his out lap, ruining any chance of a front row start.
