According to the Graded Response Action Plan the (GRAP), when particulate matter i.e. PM 10 and PM 2.5 would come between 300-500 micro gram per cubic meter for 48 hours, the odd-even rule would automatically come into effect.
The result of such a rule is that vehicles with numbers plates ending in odd or even number will be allowed on the road for specific days, usually with a one day gap.
Last year, 2-wheelers were not exempted from the odd-even rule which led to a huge burden on the city’s public transport system. Unlike cars, a huge number of people travel on motorcycles, 68 lakh to be exact. By putting two-wheelers under the odd-even scheme, the public transportation would have to accommodate around 20 to 30 lakh, people, more.
Such a huge surge of people would seriously damage the buses and the metros, thus on Monday, the supreme court, for the benefit of all, exempted two-wheelers from the odd-even rule.
All Two-wheelers and Women drivers will be exempted from the odd-even rule. The reason for the former we have just explained and the reason for the latter is to make the travel for women safer, by allowing them to drive on both days. Emergency vehicles like the fire brigade, police vehicles and Ambulances are also exempted from the rule.
