Intermot 2016: Yamaha's supernakeds get a revamp

  • Oct 6, 2016
  • |   Comments
Yamaha created a lot of flak after it unveiled the MT-10 (FZ-10 stateside), its alien- looking styling and the punchy Crossplane motor made it one of the most sought supernakeds in the market. Yamaha didn’t stop it there, it bettered it with the SP. Available in only one color combination : Blue- Silver and Carbon akin to the YZF-R1M’s paint scheme, the SP carries a lot more than the paint scheme from the R1M.

Yamaha brought in the revolutionary Ohlins electronic suspension which was limited to superbikes and race bikes, to the supernaked class. It also carries over the Full color HD TFT dashboard found on the R1M as opposed to the standard MT’s monotone dash. It also gets a quickshifter as standard, with modified mapping to improve throttle response.

The MT-09 is a great balance of mile munching and commuter comfort, with ample power for those occasional Hooning and stunting. The 849cc triple cylindered beast has now received a slew of upgrades from the outgoing model.

On the visual front, the 09 gets a new front fascia reminiscent of the glorious MT-10, with 4 LED headlights coupled to daytime running LED strips. The dash and the headlamp assembly are now in one piece as opposed to the previous model, and the dash remains the same. The rear end reminds us of the MV Agusta range of Brutale’s, with an arm mounted onto the swingarm. (Arm on an arm) which contemplates it’s roadster looks and capabilities. The engine remains the same, except for a new slip and assist clutch and a Quickshifter that’s taken directly from its bigger brother, the MT-10. New models are available from February 2017.
