New Hero Maestro Edge Road Test Review

  • Oct 14, 2015
  • |   Comments
Hero MotoCorp has evolved quite a bit after parting from their erstwhile partner Honda; it’s recently that company has launched a new autogear scooter in the market by the name “Maestro Edge”. The premium looking 111cc scooter is indigenously developed by Hero, the center of attraction is the heart of the scooter the 110.9cc air cooled single cylinder OHC engine.

Hero MotoCorp has added the “Edge” to the already existing male centric scooter Maestro; the new Maestro Edge has received not only the complete makeover but also numerous features to compete with the likes of TVS Jupiter, Mahindra Gusto, Yamaha Fascino and Honda Activa 3G.

Scooter Tested: Hero Maestro Edge LX
Price: Rs. 49,500 (Ex-showroom, Delhi)
By the sheer looks of it, the new Maestro Edge appears very attractive and a bold scooter keeping its male audience as primary target. The Maestro Edge has indeed made its road presence felt through the muscular back and the beefy front.
Style & Features:

Hero has taken the Maestro far ahead with the additional sharp lines allover and muscular design flowing from tip to toe. The overall design of the Edge looks fresh and appealing; the bold stance of the scooter requires special mention which will surely please the urban youth.

The big headlight of the Maestro edge is featured with integrated pilot lamps which can be used as DRls. There is small visor on the headlight assembly which is moreover for aesthetics rather than for any practical utility. The Maestro Edge comes featured with massive rear end, the rear tail assembly has car like cluster which is equipped with LEDs and clear lens integrated blinkers. It also holds one surprise at the back- the fuel lid is cleverly hidden inside the contoured flap of the tail assembly; which can be opened remotely from the front key slot. Performance:

The new Maestro Edge is equipped with newly developed 110.9cc air cooled, OHC 4-stroke engine, the engine is being developed indigenously by Hero and now Hero need not to share any royalty to Honda for using their technology. The mill is fairly powerful for a 111cc engine and it is refined too, but there is a constant turbine like sound coming from the engine which you might not like. The ride of new Maestro Edge is very comfortable and there is ample of torque to pull you away in the traffic. It seems Hero has done a great job on the vibration as we hardly feel any vibration on the handle bar. There are bar end weights also placed to check the unnecessary vibrations, as we could see on the performance bikes these days. Instrument Cluster & Switchgear:

The instrument console has a big bold round speedometer with tell tale light on the right side of the console. There is small digital meter as well on the board with orange lit displaying fuel gauge, odometer, service due indicator and trip meter. There is optional side stand facility on the Edge, if installed that can be connected with the display unit and can be displayed if the side stand is not disengaged. The switchgear are made up of fairly good quality, however, the quality could have been better as it is used in other plastic panels on the scooter. A thoughtful Passing light switch is been provided on the Maestro Edge and it is placed right beneath the dipper switch. There is built-in immobilizer featured in the premium variant of the Edge, along with remote seat lock opener and fuel lid opener as standard feature across both the variants. There are features like luggage hooks present at both front and rear end of the scooter; however, the rear retractable hook is optional for the LX variant of the scooter. Feature like USB mobile charging port comes standard with the premium model and that can be obtained as optional with the lower variant. The mobile charging port is ergonomically placed under the seat where there is also provision for the boot light (again comes standard with the VX and optional for LX). Riding Dynamics:

The ride of the new Maestro Edge was plush thanks to the soft and comfortable seat and sturdy front telescopic suspensions and rear hydraulic shock absorber. We rode the Edge deliberately on the rough to extremely rough terrains to check the effectiveness of the overall suspension setup and the handling of the scooter in extreme conditions. To our surprise the new Maestro Edge proves to be very comfortable on bad roads and the suspensions does their job extremely well as they took the big potholes with easy. The big 12 inch front wheel complements the sturdy front telescopic fork and the MRF Nylogrip Tubeless tyres were behaving just perfectly on almost all sorts of turfs including loose gravel. Although, as of now there is no option for the disc brake upfront but there is likelihood of this to be featured on the later models.

The Edge is featured with “Integrated Braking” system which is nothing but CBS (Combi Braking System) what we have witnessed on Honda two wheelers. There are 130mm drum brakes at both the wheels and they were just adequate to bring the scooter at halt. Feature like metal stopper at the rear brake lever is a welcome move and that is what we were badly missing in the Honda products which were originally introduced by Honda only on the earlier models of Activa. The stopper is very effective and does the job when it is needed the most; at the incline. Unlike the push lever now provided on the Honda products which are absolutely useless and totally inefficient the metal stopper works perfectly.

There are metal finish clickable rear foot-pegs which not only look good but also functional, the rough and antiskid foot board is also a thoughtful move by Hero. There is ample of leg room for the rider which is a boon for all sorts of riding, there is also sufficient space for the pillion as the Maestro is featured with class leading long & wide seat. There is also class leading under-seat space available on the scooter, where you can easily put your full face helmet in with lots of space still left for your knick knacks. Verdict:

Hero MotoCorp has put sincere efforts to make Maestro Edge their flagship product in scooter segment; it is evident from their newly developed engine which is very close to the Honda engines in refinement. The Maestro Edge is a product featured with loads of thoughtful features put by the company in a single product; it seems that Hero has tried to bring all the good things in one place taking inspiration from different products of different manufacturers.

Overall, the new Hero Maestro Edge looks a premium product as compare to the other competition, it is a great product for those who want to look different and yet stylish.
