Comparison- Yamaha Saluto Vs Bajaj Discover 125M Vs Honda CB Shine Vs Hero Glamour

Amongst the 125cc executive commuter class motorcycles Yamaha has added another product as Saluto, after the entry level motorbike segment it is the most lucrative class as even the entry level commuter motorcycle customer tends to upgrade to this segment. Yamaha Motor India is also eyeing on this segment and hence recently launched a new product Saluto with brand new 125cc engine with their patent Blue Core technology.

Almost every other manufacturer has put their best bets in this segment, therefore the new entrant Saluto will also face tough competition. Lets check it out the potential competition that the Yamaha Saluto is going to face and compare them on the basis of their features and specifications.

1. Engine, Transmission And Performance: Yamaha Saluto:

The Saluto is equipped with 125cc 4- stroke engine featured with Blue Core technology, which is known for the optimum performance and fuel efficiency. However Yamaha seems to be focusing on the mileage from the bike but there is always performance DNA of Yamaha exists in their products. The new 125cc engine is capable of producing 8.3 Ps of power, which looks on the lesser side when we compare with other competitors but the torque output of the bike is kept at healthy 10.1 Nm which peaks at early 4500 Rpm. The power is transmitted through 4- speed transmission gear.

Bajaj Discover 125M:

Bajaj has got a very potent offering from the executive 125cc segment- Discover 125M. The bike is equipped with 124.6cc air cooled engine with 4-valve technology, it is due to the superior technology used by the Bajaj the Discover 125M churns out 11.5 Ps of power figure, which is highest in the segment. The engine is mated to 4-speed gear and the claimed fuel efficiency of the bike is also substantial.

Honda CB Shine:

One of the crucial competitor and persistent performer from the segment, the Honda CB Shine is recently updated as CB Shine DX and the 124.7cc Honda engine is now also featured with HET technology for better fuel efficiency. The Honda engines are known for their smoothness and the CB shines's engine is also not an exception. The engine produces 10.3 Ps of power at 7500 Rpm with peak torque of 10.5 Nm at 5500 Rpm. the engine is also mated to 4-speed transmission.

Hero Glamour:

The Hero Glamour is plonked with tried and tested 124.7cc air cooled 4-stroke engine producing 9.1 Ps of power at 7000 Rpm and 10.4 Nm of torque at 4000 Rpm. The engine is mated to 4- speed gear and as far as peak torque production is concerned the Glamour's engine is the only bike amongst the competition that receives peak torque as early as 4000 Rpm.

In engine, transmission and performance segment Bajaj Discover 125M is the clear leader followed by Honda CB Shine, Hero Glamour and Yamaha Saluto.

2. Brakes & Suspensions: Yamaha Saluto:

The Yamaha Saluto comes with only drum brakes option and there are drum brakes of 130mm featured at both the wheels. As far as suspensions are concerned, there is telescopic shock absorbers upfront and the rear has spring loaded dual shockups pinned at tubular swingarm.

Bajaj Discover 125M:

Bajaj Discover 125M is featured with optional 200mm front disc brakes and at rear there is standard 130mm drum brakes. The front of the bike is suspended on telescopic fork whereas at the rear there is Nitrox gas filled shock absorbers. The rear end is featured with box shaped swingarm.

Honda CB Shine:

The Honda CB Shine also has optional front disc brake and rear drum brake, the bike is suspended on the front telescopic fork and rear spring loaded dual suspensions. The conventional tubular swingarm is placed instead of box swingarm.

Hero Glamour:

The Hero Glamour has big 240mm optional disc brake upfront and 130mm rear drum brake, there is front telescopic shock absorber and rear 5- step adjustable hydraulic shock absorber in place. Rectangular box swingarm is featured on the Hero Glamour for better stability.

3. Ground Clearance, Kerb Weight And Fuel Capacity: Yamaha Saluto:

The Saluto has the best in class ground clearance of 180mm which helps the bike to clear any obstacle on or off road with ease. Yamaha also managed to keep the weight of the bike checked and kept it at very impressive and lowest in class at 112 Kgs. Although, the fuel tank capacity is limited to only 7.6 Liters which is also lowest in the class and might not be liked by many who desire to take it on long rides but keeping the fact that it is a commuter bike the 7.6 Liters fuel is passable.

Bajaj Discover 125M:

Discover 125M has the 165mm ground clearance, which is next to best to the Yamaha Saluto's 180mm ground clearance. The Discover 125M is also comes next to the Yamaha Saluto as far as kerb weight is concerned, the bike tips the scale at 118 Kgs. In the fuel tank capacity department also the Discover comes next to the Saluto with the capacity of 9.5 Liters.

Honda CB Shine:

The Honda CB Shine has the ground clearance of 157mm which is certainly not impressive if we compare it specially with Saluto's. The CB Shine weighs at 120 Kgs with partially filled liquids with the fuel capacity of 10.5 Liters.

Hero Glamour:

The Glamour has the lowest ground clearance amongst the competition as it comes at 150mm, the kerb weight of the Hero Glamour is also lies at 129 Kgs with the highest fuel capacity in the class of 13.6 Liters.

4. Price & Verdict: The Yamaha Saluto and Bajaj Discover 125M are competitively priced at Rs 52,000 and Rs 51,274 respectively (both Ex-Showroom, Delhi), whereas the Honda Cb Shine comes at Rs 54,025 (Ex- Showroom, Delhi) with drum brakes and self start, the latest edition of Honda CB Shine DX is available at 55,524 with same features. Hero Glamour is priced at Rs 55,925 (Ex-showroom, Delhi).

Based on the features and pricing it is clear that Honda is going to face tough competition from Yamaha Saluto, whereas the Bajaj Discover 125M is also value for money at a given price tag, only problem seen with Bajaj products is their policy of frequently obsoleting their products and the over all quality where Yamaha has upper hand, they neither discontinue their products so easily nor their over all quality is questionable. Hero Glamour is now looks an aged model though it comes with reliable and tried n tested engine.

Therefore, out of available choices the Yamaha Saluto looks promising with Discover 125M coming next and Honda CB Shine will follow the suite with Glamour coming last in the race.
